Eiffel Tower, Paris, France Back to the France attractions list »

The world famous Eiffel Tower rises into the sky above Champ de Mars in Paris. The tower is a symbol of the glory of steel during the 19th Century. The tower rises more than 300 meters with incredible lightness, despite its 7+ tons of steel structure, like a twine creating a wonderful lace ornament. The Eiffel Tower is not only a decoration of Paris, but television broadcasting tower as well.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris was built three years prior to the 1889 World Fair dedicated to 100th Anniversary of the French Revolution. Before the building of Chrysler in Manhattan it was the single tallest building in the world. However, during the first years of its existence, the Eiffel Tower was heavily criticized by the artistic and literary elite of Paris. It was about to be taken down, and if it weren't for the fact that the tower was a perfect platform for antennas, much needed during those times for accelerating science and technology, it would have surely been taken down. Luckily, the Eiffel Tower was rehabilitated and stands proudly till this day.

The Eiffel Tower was named in honor of its designer and architect Gustav Eiffel. The tower is not only the most recognizable piece of architecture in France, but one of the most popular tourist destinations as well.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris is very stable: strong winds only move its top by 10-12 centimeters. During periods of high heat cause by sunlight, the tower can become inclined by as much as 18 centimeters. The flood of Seine of 1910, which had the base of the tower submerged under water, did not cause any damage.

The height of the tower is 322 meters, including the television antenna at the top. The full weight of the metal carcass is more than 10 tons. The Eiffel Tower consists of three platforms, which look like squares, formed by four columns. The third platform has a beacon with a dome, and above it there is a sightseeing area 274 meters above ground level. There are two ways to get up in the tower: using the elevators or using the staircase, which has 1792 stairs.

Today there is a watch tower on the third platform, which can be reached by elevator. An astonishing view of the city opens up from that platform. The unbelievable feelings you can experience and the emotions you will be left with are certainly worth a try. There can be 10400 people simultaneously in the tower.

6 million people visit the Eiffel Tower each year. The watch tower and sightseeing platforms with binoculars, restaurants, souvenir shops, and "The Eiffel Tower" museum can be reached by elevators. A lot of people in the world still dream about visiting this miracle of human progress and mod ern technology.
