Pamukkale – the name of a rather small village in Turkey, a five hour drive from Antalya. The village became famous due to a unique natural phenomenon that is observed nearby. For hundreds and thousands of years a hot spring was pouring calcium rich mineral water over the local mountain rocks. When the water cooled down and evaporated, bright white shining cascades were formed in the shape of waves, as if melting down from the rock's surface. On hot summer days you will feel as if you are actually in the middle of a snow desert.
Pamukkale in Turkey is one of those "must see for yourself" places in the world. The name stands for "cotton castle".
From afar it may seem as if there is a huge white castle standing on the top of the mountain, but such is only the illusion of the eyes. Hot springs were used since the times of the Roman Empire for their healing properties, particularly in regard to some illnesses. The snow-white terraces filled with blue water are not just amazing to look at, but posses healing properties. The waters at Pamukkale are rich with calcium oxide and hydrogen sulfide, which make it the most famous health spa and resort area on the territory of Anatolia.
The resort, known since ancient times for its healing powers, exists for almost 2 thousand years. Even from far away the scenery truly impresses the observer: a multitude of thermal springs flows peacefully over the beautiful plateau, forming many stalactites in the chalk-like minerals, as well as small natural terraces filled with bluish water. There is a narrow path leading upwards, and all the tourists walk barefoot to avoid bringing external impurity on this impeccable mountain.
Once upon a time princess Cleopatra herself used to bathe in these healing springs, and today such recreation is available to any visitor. In addition to the white travertine formations, the ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis located nearby, also present considerable interest. The remains of the temples and the amphitheater will neither leave a historian indifferent nor a casual passer-by tourist.
The temperature of the waters in Pamukkale reaches 40 degrees, while the air temperature is around 35. You come out from the springs and you are cold!
