Cadiz Carnival, Andalusia (February 7th - February 17th , 2010)Back to the events listCarnival in Cadiz is different from all other carnivals first of all due to the fact that they hold a contest not for one person but for different groups and unions. This is a tradition. The preparations start long before Cadiz carnival begins, almost one month in advance. For example, this year rehearsal and contests were started on January 9, but main carnival events will happen from February 7 to 17. But the celebration goes on till February 28. One of the most exceptional features of Cadiz Carnival is food celebration and contests. Of course, the fancy dress is still the most important; it can be individual or made for a couple or even a group of people sometimes. They wear it every day, but it's especially important to wear it on the first Saturday when there is a contest for the most fancy dress. The culmination of winter event is a procession of groups and companies of relatives or friends along the street with loud laugh and noise. It's a shame to miss "Carousel of choirs", performance of choirs on the main square, on Sunday or Monday. Thousands of people come on purpose to enjoy beautiful singing and choose the one they liked the best. On Sunday residents celebrate merry cavalcade with hours-long procession of dressed up people and decorated carts. Back to the events list |
