The National Grandmother's Day, France (March 6th, 2011)Back to the events list
Annually in the first Sunday of March France celebrates the National Grandmother's Day. This day all grandmothers and all the women older than 55 are treated with a special respect and esteem.
There was held a survey in France, among about a thousand elderly people older than 65. It turned out that 67.3% of respondents consider their family more important than all the other components of their life, even more important than their health and political life of the country. 82.8% said that their grandchildren were the main point of their lives. It's interesting that 48.2% admitted that they are helping grandchildren with their homework every day.
This day the kind French grannies that don't usually look like old women get dressed up and drink liqueur, eat almond biscuits and ice cream, and, of course, receive presents.
French grandmothers grow younger every day, half of them is a little older than fifty, and many of them keep on working actively. Maybe, this is the reason why grandmother's day is on Sundays.
Though the majority of French grannies see their grandchildren at least once a week, and a third of them dedicates them more than a half of their free time, thy are waiting impatiently for the "grandmother's day" when all their children and grandchildren get together. This day grandmothers are expected to get flowers and gifts from their beloved grandsons and granddaughters.
During the holiday travelling companies offer to grandmothers and their grandchildren free tours in buses, restaurants create special menus, and shops open special sections, where grandmothers – only grandmothers! - can buy goods with discounts.
