Each year, in the beginning of September, the residents of Naples hold a festival in honor of the favorite dish of the Italian, pizza, the symbol of the country. However, it is considered a Neapolitan one, only if it is made of local products and following traditional recipes.
During the festival, everywhere in Naples the flavor of pizza is felt. People can buy it everywhere: in cafes, restaurants, or in the streets from pitchers. Different master-classes, where cooks make the "right" classical pizza, are held in each part of the city, while others contest for the title of the best cookery specialist in the main square of the city.
The program of the Pizzafest includes the competition of the famous pizzaiolos (pizza makers), where it is possible to taste freshly cooked pizzas. Besides the tasting, the guests of the festival can enjoy the performance shows, concerts and cabaret, participate in dance and sports competitions.
Pizzafest in Naples is the greatest festival of pizza in the world. It is by no means surprising, for this dish, so much adored by the Italian, allegedly appeared namely in Naples in the 16th century.
It is recommended to visit Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba, the first pizzeria in the world, opened in 1738. It is situated in Via Port'Alba, 18.
In addition, you can find out, how pizza Margherita got its name, and visit the place, where it had been cooked for the first time for Margherita of Savoy, the spouse of the Italian king.
