Snail Festival, Gesico (October 10th – October 17th, 2009 )Back to the events list
Boil some snails fillet in water with an addition of dry wine, then simmer the boiled snails with tomatoes and onions…
If this recipe does not make you sick, then you are welcome at the snail festival! By the way, we are not inviting you to France, as you might think, but to Italy. It is Italy in particular, on the sunny island of Sardinia, where the above mentioned yearly festival dedicated to these amazing mollusks takes place. Snail festival in Italy was held for the first time in 1993 in a small town called Gesico (Cagliari province).
There is an incredible amount of snails inhabiting this region, leading sometimes to very interesting situations. For example, one time in Cagliari they were forced to close down the airport because the runway was blocked by an army of snails.
Gesico, by the way, is often called "The Snail Town", and its people are proud of this nickname.
You will be able to see a lot of interesting things at the snail festival, including: horse races, exhibitions, theater shows, and concerts. The program is saturated with events to please the most fickle visitors. In addition, the city has a fair which features many local gastronomy specials. The main feature of the whole gastronomy program are the snails, obviously! Fried, roasted, steamed, and in all kinds of sauces.
We are convinced that gourmands are packing their suitcases as we speak to go to Sardinia! Usually the holiday falls on the third week of October.
