Are you not indifferent to strawberry? Italians have a wonderful holiday - just for you! Driving 30 km to the south-east of Rome, you find yourself in a small town called Nemi.
Sweet fragrant strawberry is growing here all year round. The second weekend of June is entirely devoted only to this berry! At this time Nemi holds Strawberry Festival. Members are waiting for the Strawberry Fair, local wine and carnival, when the locals dress up in costumes of the 19th century, depicting the strawberry pickers. Some of them even put on the dress of beautiful strawberry! Street performances, dance, music and the heady aroma of fragrant berries wrap up the city. But the culmination of the festival only begins: visitors of the festival can try for free 1001 kg of strawberries with champagne. This strawberry splendor ends with a great fireworks show, mirrored in the smooth waters of the volcanic Nemi lake.
This lake itself is a local landmark. For the special beauty it was earlier called "Mirror of Diana", whose temple had stood on its shores. Another temple of Diana was placed right in the waters of the lake - it was one of the two entertainment vehicles, allegedly built by Caligula. Subsequently, these vessels sank and were found only in the late 1920's, for which the lake was a bit drained to 22 meters, using specially constructed channels. The findings were brought to the specially created Nemi museum, which, unfortunately, was burned by Hitler's troops at the end of the Second World War. Admirers of Christian relics will also find lots of interesting things in Nemi. The local church keeps the painting of the crucifixion of Christ, written in the XVII century by the monk Vincenzo da Bassiano.
So, try not to miss the second Sunday in June and arrive at Nemi Strawberry Festival.
