Five cultural monuments in Turkey are added to the UNESCO World Heritage ListApr 30, 2009

Five ancient monuments joined the UNESCO World Heritage List this year, announced Alper Ozkan the executive assistant at the Advisory Bureau of Culture and Tourism of Turkey in Moscow. According to him, the UNESCO World Heritage List was augumented with the ancient city Aphrodisias (on the Antalya Coast), the ruins of the ancient city Sagalassos, neolitic town Çatalhöyük (in the East of the country), the ancient city Perga (near Aksu in Antalya) and the remains of the ancient town Likya (near Marmaris).

The addition of these sites to the UNESCO World Heritage List will certainly attract archeological, historical and cultural interest to these ancient locations, but also attract tourism companies that sometimes organize excursions and other trips to these towns and cities" – noted A. Ozkan. - "Also, the new additions to the World Heritage List will allow to obtain funding, which is vital to the restoration and maintainance of the monuments." Until 2009 Turkey was the home to 18 cultural monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Some of the most noteworthy being the ruins of the ancient city of Efes and the curch of St. Ncholas in Demra, which attract millions of tourists each year.
