June 11th-June 14th 2009 (dates to be announced) La Patum de Berga Fire FestivalJun 06, 2009At the end of May-June of each year thousands of tourist arrive to the small town called Berga in eastern Catalonia to participate in a festival called “La Patum”. It is believed that the name of the festival was chosen to resemble the sounds of the Big Drum (tabal): pa-tum, pa-tum. In its essence, La Patum is a medieval mystery that symbolizes the battle between good and evil. During the ancient times this was the way in which Catalonians celebrated the Catholic religious holiday – Corpus Christi. However, as time went by, the religious ritual transformed into a colorful eyesight that featured a carnival, processions, and fire shows. Not incidentally, the church does not really approve this event, as it is considered an inheritance of paganism.
During La Patum life in Berga becomes truly vibrant. The streets are filled with dancing giants and dwarves. The town is filled with devil’s servants and fire hydras only waiting to burn local folks and tourist with hell’s fire. The local people perform a traditional Catalonian dance called Sardana. The evening shows of “La Patum” fall on the period of Thursday through Sunday of the festival week. On Thursday morning a special sermon is held at the local church where the whole town gathers. After the religious service the festival resumes with new strength. For the entertainment of the public concerts and shows are organized. La Patum is interesting due to the fact that one can witness old traditional dances of giants and people in other costumes, which resemble a theatrical act that accompanied medieval religious traditions.
In the evening people change into clothing with long sleeves, big hats, and use scarves or handkerchiefs to cover their faces. All these preparations are necessary because the town is going to get hot. Devils with fools sitting on their horns, fireworks and various squibs turn Berga into a town on fire. Back to news
