Melon Festival in FranceJun 17, 2009Form the 10th to the 14th of July there will be a melon festival in the French town Cavallion called Melon de Cavaillon. This event attracts hundreds of tourists each year to this small Provence town. Cavaillon is the biggest producer and supplier of melons to markets and stores all over France. People here have an attitude towards melons similar to the one that wine producers have towards grapes – reverence and respect. Thus, the festival in Cavaillon practically becomes a national holiday in honor of a delicious agricultural product.
Each person here has a chance to become a Knight of the Melon Order. Each visitor also has a chance to give the world his or her own personal recipe of a dish with melons, which will be much appreciated says Whatsonwhen.com. Numerous melon tastings will be featured during the festival, as well as parades in honor of melons. On the first day of the festival there will be a picnic near the horse racing stadium – the entrance is 19 Euros. The price includes Provencal food, all you can eat, and the public will get a chance to enjoy a blues band.
Street orchestras will be playing music during the whole festival. And the organizers of this year’s event also promise a bull fight and many interesting competitions for visitors. The last day of the festival will begin with a ritualistic melon eating frenzy. Then the Knights of the Melon Order will be announced. And afterwards, all those willing to pay 20 Euros will get a chance to sit at the celebration dinner during which there will be a melon speed eating contest. For the festival finale there will be games of petanque, and cards. Back to news
