Tourist get conned in Rome Jul 11, 2009Foreign tourist get conned in Rome just about anywhere they go – in the bars, when they order coffee, in the cabs, and when they buy fruit. These are the conclusions of Italian newspaper La Repubblica. A correspondent of the newspaper found out first-hand that every foreigner gets conned by pretending to be a tourist and spending a night out in the Eternal City. Her report was done as a follow up on an earlier scandal that happened several days earlier, when a group of Japanese tourists, after eating their launch at a small restaurant was presented with a bill of 700 Euros, 150 of which was tips.
Even bars practice price discrimination, for tourists and locals pay different prices for everything they buy, notes the newspaper. Foreigners pay 1 euro for their coffee, which is 20 cents more than the price paid by Italians, and a serving of ice-cream can cost a foreigner as much as 12 Euros. Inflated tariffs are also widespread in taxi services. For a short drive from Termini airport to Plaza di Espagna, a foreigner has to pay 25 Euros: the drivers explain that these two locations are far away from each other. Record prices are paid for fruit downtown. Their prices can reach as much as 10 Euros per kilogram.
Regardless of the restrictions every restaurant will add 2-3 Euros to every bill for the bread and the service. Back to news
