Tears of Eros, October 20th – January 31st, Madrid Nov 02, 2009
The name of this new exhibition, which opened at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, refers every dedicated connoisseur of art and philosophy to the book of George Bataille, French writer and philosopher who stood at the roots of postmodernism.
Every visitor, within reasonable limits of artistic sophistication and conceptual understanding of symbols, will probably notice the following motives in the structure and positioning of exhibit items – innocent allurement, temptation and seduction, passion, atonement, and death, in other words pass along the traditional route "between Eros and Thanatos". For the unsophisticated amateurs of erotic art the only evident idea, according to Guillermo Solana, the curator of the exhibition, will be the following: "Passion was, and always will be. It intrigues and inspires artists today as it did five centuries ago, and even five thousand years ago."
Visitors will be able to see the works of the following artist featured at the exhibition: Auguste Rodin, Henri Rousseau, Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Edvard Munch, as well as the paintings, photographs, video installations of contemporary artists, such as – John Currin, James White, Marc Quinn, and Bill Viola.
