The Head of Emperor Octavian Augustus was found in Spain Nov 20, 2009Spanish archeologists have found the marble head of the roman emperor Octavian Augustus in the province of Saragossa. The discovery was made during digging near the city of Calatayud, in a place where the ancient roman city of Bilbilid was once located. Supposedly, the sculpture was created in the period between the 15 and 30 AD. At this time emperor Tiberius ruled the country, The sculpture depicts Octavian Augustus, with his head covered by a priest cloak, and as the agency notes, the head has been surprisingly well preserved.
The head was found on the territory of a Bilbilid theater – and, as the archeologists hypothesize, the sculpture was located in a special niche of the shrine, in the upper part of the amphitheater. The back side of the sculpture has a metal rod, which apparently used to uphold the head of the sculpture against the wall. Back to news
