Walking Festival to take place in Madeira, Portugal Dec 07, 2009
From the 12th to the 16th of January, 2010 there will be a festival in Madeira, called the Madeira Islands Walking Festival – the brain-child of British writer and photographer Terry Marsh. From 2004 until 2006 Marsh has organized walking festivals on the Isle of Man, this coming year the festival is planned to happen in Madeira.
Madeira is an ideal place for walking tours. The local climate is rather mild, with relatively few rainfalls. Besides, the island can brag about having some of the most picturesque sites, including volcanic mountain top formations, beautiful water channels (called levadas), a multitude of flower and general plant species, informs the official website of the festival.
All the walking routes were planned, traced, and tested by specialists to make sure they are safe for tourists. The participants of the festival will be accompanied by rangers from the local forest authority, thus the walking festival will not have anyone lost during the promenade.
There is a total of 21 routes, with varying length, between 3 and 18.5 kilometers. The price of participation varies as well between 7.6 and 25 Euros. The organizers recommend that tourists take some waterproof clothing and comfortable shoes. The average temperature on the Madeira Islands in January is +15ºC.
