Christmas for the sea predators Dec 17, 2009
At the giant aquarium of the Madrid zoo, divers have established a tradition for installing a Christmas sculpture consisting of nine figures and a star fall.
This unusual piece of work had to be performed under the constant observation of 12 very intimately involved and interested parties, mainly large scale representatives of the ocean life. Among the observers there were two sharks, each having a mass in excess of 180 kilograms.
The whole operation took about 40 minutes, and during this time the two divers installed the decoration and four others were carefully watching the behavior of the predators, to make sure that in case of emergency they could warn their colleagues about a coming danger.
The tradition of installing such type of decorations in the very center of the largest pool in the Madrid aquarium appeared in 1995. For the first time, it was attempted to turn sea animals to Christianity by installing three figures in the pool – Saint Joseph, Virgin Mary, and of course, baby Jesus.
Gradually the composition was diversified with the introduction of new elements, and this year the inhabitants of the Madrid aquarium will celebrate Christmas in the company of 9 biblical figures.
