One more heritage site to be declared in Tenerife Feb 14, 2010The municipal council of Tenerife has recently begun a project seeking to declare the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Siena, located in La Laguna, a place of cultural interest in monument category.
A group of experts in the area of cultural and historic heritage is currently working under this project. The entire architectural complex with the surrounding buildings on La Carrera Street together with the monastery itself will acquire the special status. As it is known from the sources, this is one of the most significant from the point of view of cultural and historical heritage and best preserved ensembles of religious architecture of the beginning of the 17th century existing in La Laguna and its outskirts.
This huge architectural complex is surrounded by a peripheral wall that was built in 1607 around the ruined patrimony of local governor. The monastery of the ensemble that opened its doors in 1611 stands out, as well as the church with the interiors of altar decorations of the beginning of the 18th century. The ensemble of the monastery Saint Catherine of Siena is a brilliant example of Canarian architecture of the 17th-18th centuries. Back to news
