The government of Gran Canaria protects local plantsFeb 18, 2010The town council of Gran Canaria (Cabildo de Gran Canaria) has launched a new project on protection of rare species of local plants. This mainly applies to such species of plants as "Gildana de Risco Blanco" (Teline rosmarinifolia), "Turmero Peludo" (Helianthemum bystropogophyllum) and "Jarilla de Inagua", (Helianthemum inaguae). The population of these plant species in Gran Canaria is small nowadays.
In terms of this project, the territory of Gran Canaria was divided into several zones, where the works on preservation of species of plants would be held. Specialists are trying to restore the population of "Gildana de Risco Blanco" in the zone of Andenes de Tasarte and the population of "Turmero Peludo" in the mountains of Los Hornos. Besides that, in Andenes de Tasarte there is the only known on the island population of rare species of "Jarilla de Inagua", that is under the threat of disappearance.
Specialists separate the areas of distribution of these plants with metallic net in order to prevent the herbivorous animals from going there, including such small animals as rabbits. Since "Turmero Peludo" grows in mountainous locations where it's impossible to spread metallic net, biologists will create another population of this species nearby, where it will be possible to realize the new project successfully. It's assumed that substantial improvements are expected to be seen in the end of 2010. Back to news
