Tourists are drawn to Spanish museums Feb 27, 2010It's amazing, but the popularity of museums in Spain increased during the crisis year of 2009. In 2009 21 state museums of Spain were visited by 7,222 million people, which is 360, 000 more people, or 5.2% up on the previous year. They don't have the exact data on foreign tourists among the total number of visitors since they don't count them separately, but according to the estimation of specialists, their part is 50-70% of total number. The most significant flow of visitors can be observed in the biggest museums. According to the opinion of the Minister of Culture, Ángeles González-Sinde, this tendency must be mentioned specially, because museum boom happened at the time of economic crisis' peak, assuming the decrease of expenses for every family for entertainment and tourism.
As a result, the Prado Museum was visited by 276,000 people, which makes it the most visited museum of all museums in Spain. The Art Center of Queen Sophia has also improved its rates by 15% as compared to 2008. Last year its exhibits were observed by 2,087,000 people. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection was visited by 801,000 tourists, which is 6% up on the pre-crisis year of 2008. The management of museums of Spain and Ministry of Culture consider that the positive results were achieved thanks to the broad exhibition program that promises to be even more interesting and various in 2010.
