Sardinia to offer now swimming with whales for tourists Apr 09, 2010The Italian island of Sardinia, very loved by tourists, has obviously turned into a very attractive place for fin whales too. During the latest month the experts have numerously encountered the appearance of the Balaenoptera Physalus whale family near the coast. They were accompanied by dolphins and tuna fish. The manager of the ecological center of Cala Gonone, Stefano Lavra, explained that they have been monitoring the migration of whales for many years, but the news is that they have been constantly seen in this sea recently.
This past Tuesday, to amazement of first tourists arriving at Calaluna beach and Bue Marino cave (where seals used to live yet several dozens years ago), whales swam by at the distance of not more than 300 meters from the coast. Paolo Insolera, a scuba diver from Bologna, who was in the sea at that time, even had a chance to touch a whale. The eastern shore of the island is rich in species, there is a so-called natural lab located there. However, Stefano Lavra assumes that the current influx of whales can be caused by other reasons too. The whales of Balaenoptera Physalus family can be 27 meters in length and weigh up to 90 tons, but the species present in the Mediterranean Sea rarely exceed 20 meters in length.
