Tropical greenhouses opened at Jardin des plantes, ParisJun 12, 2010After 5 years of restoration works, there are 4 tropical greenhouses opened in Paris at Jardin des plantes. Three of them display rich collections of flora that grows in wet tropical forests, deserts, in New Caledonia. The forth greenhouse is devoted to the history of vegetable kingdom. The tropical greenhouses of Jardin des plantes were built in 1834-1836 and became the first greenhouses in the world made of metal and glass. During the restoration works that were started in 2005, glass parts were disassembled and plastic tents were pulled on instead in order for plants not to get frosted over. During the repair, the historical look of the greenhouses was restored on both outer and inner sides. The technical equipment was upgraded.
The greenhouses represent a suite of rooms. Therefore, the visitors go through tropical forests, then they appear in the middle of desert, get up the hill in the greenhouse of New Caledonia and by crossing the street, they appear to be in the greenhouse dedicated to the history of plants. During the excursion visitors will see some movies, as well as feel it with their organs of sense by looking at pictures, smelling it an hearing it, Paris.fr reports. Jardin des plantes was founded in 1794 and is a part of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle. It is situated in the V administrative district of Paris among the streets of Cuvier, Buffon, Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire and the Valhubert square.
