The festival of Moors and Christians in Alicante Dec 06, 2008On the 6th of December in Spain will be held the festival of Moors and Christians – the most significant event in Alicante, based on the mixture of religions, history and street carnival. Now popular, this event goes back to the time Reconquista – the time when Christians fought for Spain against Arabs. All Spaniards celebrate this occasion, but it has its own peculiarities in every region.
In Alicante the festival starts with the arrival of solemn procession, dressed up as once combatants were. The attire of the procession participants contributes to recreation of historic appearance of Moors and Christians. The culmination of the festival is considered a frame-up epoch-making battle ended by a comical retreat of “Moors” and grandiose feast of the winners. The city celebrates the liberation five times a year and the final festival is held on the 6th of December. Back to news
