Spain to protect territoryJan 26, 2009"First they stole the Rock (the rock of 426 m situated in the southern part of Iberian Peninsula, in Gibraltar) from us, now they're robbing us again," said Jose Ignacio Landaluce, a Spanish MP from Popular party. The politician claims that the tourist project is being built on land stolen from Spain. The territory of Gibraltar takes 6.5 square km. The 4 million U.S. dollars project Eastside is being erected on land created on platforms at sea. They are planning to build several squares, swimming pools, gardens, apartment complexes, luxury hotels and a marina, reports The Times.
Landaluce says that there is nothing said about three miles into the Mediterranean Sea in the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 that the Gibraltar claims as its own. According to the agreement that ended the war for Spanish heritage, Gibraltar was given to Britain. Guillermo Galeote, a Spanish MEP, plans to demand an assessment of the environmental impact from the European Union. Back to news
