Medieval festival in Baiona Feb 18, 2009The Arrival Festival will be held in Spanish port city of Baiona. The Arrival Festival is an annual holiday held in Baiona, devoted to the arrival of Caravel Pinta of Columbus with news about the existence and discovery of the New World. This important event took place on March 1, 1493. The inhabitants of Baiona, the province of Pontevedra (Galicia, Spain) became the first people in the Old World who learned the news. The Arrival Festival is held every month of March since 1996 when the exact copy of “Pinta” was restored.
The scene of the arrival of Caravel Pinta in port of Baiona will be repeated again on March 7 and March 8 with the support of local authorities. Besides the festive arrival of the Caravel, a part of performance of Vicente Yanez Pinzon will be shown. Vicente Yanez Pinzon was a partner of Columbus who arrived on Caravel and told residents about the discovery of the New World.
These days the old quarters and its neighbouring area become a medieval fair where 15th-cententury-resembling crafts and products are sold. Streets are crowded with street musicians, minstrels, jugglers, and craftsmen bringing back to life the Middle Ages in Baiona. And of course, everyone will be able to get on board of the Cravel Pinta, see the ship and feel the importance of the most important geographical event for the whole world. Tourists are very attracted by the Arrival Festival because it’s very interesting to take part in the celebration of this important historical event that changed the conceptions about the world of European people 5 centuries ago.
