Ancient burial place of Phoenician people found in TiraNov 13, 2008Spanish archeological expedition found an ancient burial place of Phoenician people in Tira dated the 9th-7th century b c, says ITAR-TASS. This discovery tells us more about traditions of sailors, who created sea trade ways in Mediterranean sea. Maria Obet, a professor from Barcelona University, who was the leader of the expedition, said that scientists discovered 60 closed vessels. These vessels had the bones of burnt people inside. There were found 40 more pots. According to ancient traditions of Phoenician people, that’s where souls of dead people find peace.
Ali Beddaui, head of antique department, said that the discovery in Tira is unique. Since 1950s they could find anything like that. All the other relique belonged to late eras – Ellin, Rome, and Byzantium. Now there is a big research work ahead, but we will learn more about life of ancient residents of Levant. Back to news
