La Fiesta de Sant Medir Mar 01, 2009If you love sweets, then you simply ought to visit Fiesta de Sant Medir in Barcelona. The festival takes place on March 3rd of each year. Some thirty groups participate in this parade on the streets of Gracia near Barcelona, Spain. Colored carriages, horses, flags and costumes – all this action takes place in the parade conducted here since the 16th Century, also known as St. Emetrio’s Day. Approximately around 8 PM people go out on Calle Grande de Gracia to fall under a hailstorm of candy thrown out from carriages right into the crowd. It a child’s dream come true! The festival ends with fireworks in the Jardinets de Gracia.
Gracia is considered a part of Barcelona only from a few decades ago. It used to be an independent village, and even now some locals maintain that Gracia is still independent even as a part of the cosmopolitan area. Gracia has preserved its Catalonian vibration.
