Antique necropolis found in SicilyNov 13, 2008Italian archeological expedition that worked during archeological digs in an ancient city of Hemer in Sicily, found a Greek cemetery from the 5th and 6th century. It’s assumed that necropolis includes 10 000 burials which means that it’s the biggest cemetery on the island.
Researchers assume that not only residents are buried there (one-third of them are babies), but also soldiers who died during fights with Carphagen in 480 or 409 year. They found a lot of burial goods, including children’s.
Archeologists study this common grave that has over a dozen of skeletons of people who died violently. Some of them have arrows in skeletons.
Bone remaining is very valuable for anthropologists because it’s possible to learn about their life and diet of people of Hemer.
Hemer was ruined by Corphagen people in the end of the 5th century. The residents who survived moved to an adjacent city that is called Termini Imerese now. It was known as Thermae Himerenses in ancient times. Back to news
