Golf as a driver of economy Mar 17, 2009A fashionable golf resort will open very soon in Sicily. According Raphaelle Lombardo, head of the region, Verdura Golf & Spa Resort in Sciacca, Sicily is one of the most ambitious projects undertaken for the development of golf in Italy. This project will permit Sicily to compete with some of the best resort in Europe and United States in the luxury-tourism market. Lombardo also mentioned that the government of Sicily regards tourism as a key factor for the development of the region. The new hotel chain is being built by British Rocco Forte Hotels. The resort will be located in Verdura, a beautiful place near Sciacca, Sicily and will open its doors for visitor by the end of May.
The resort spans 250 hectares (120 are allocated for 2 golf fields with 18 and 9 holes respectively). Titti Bufardeci, vice-president of the region responsible for tourism development, reiterates to the president that the start of the Sciacca project demonstrated the positive attitude of local government towards tourism. According to him, the touristic sector will become a major driver for the Sicilian economy. And golf, as a sport has all the chances to provide additional incentives for tourism on this famous island. Back to news
