An exact copy of a World Wonder to be built in Turkey Mar 18, 2009The mayor of Bodrum, Mazlum Apan, announced the intention to build an exact copy of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, which is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The tomb of king Maussolos of Caria was erected around 350 B.C. in the ancient city of Halicarnassus. Currently the modern city of Bodrum is located there. The magnificent structure called Mausoleum resembled a Greek temple surrounded by columns and statues. Its height reached 46 meters and in the 14th Century the Mausoleum was destroyed in an earthquake. The remains were used by the Knights of St. John of Malta to build a crusader castle.
In the 19th Century archeological research was conducted in the region and all surviving fragments, including the statue of Maussolos and his wife Artemisia, were transferred to the British Museum in London. The Mausoleum is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world (the only survivor is the Kheops Pyramid in Egypt). Thousands of tourists visit the ruins of the Mausoleum each year, but the mayor of Bodrum intends to make this site even more attractive. For this purpose he plans to build an exact copy of the tomb on a one-to-one scale, informs Turkish press agency – Hurriyet. Back to news
